afrol News, 17 January - The Malawian Skills Development and Income Generation Project yesterday received the support of African Development Bank (ADB). The project is attached to the Malawian poverty reduction strategy.

The African Development Bank yesterday announced it had approved a loan of approximately US$ 12 million to finance a Skills Development and Income Generation Project in Malawi.

- The project will help to support the Government Poverty Reduction Strategy through human development by providing life skills training for the poor, particularly women and unemployed youth, through functional literacy, basic business management and skills development training, the ADB says.

The project's community life skills training is also to include awareness creation among the target groups on critical crosscutting issues of HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, nutrition, gender focussing and environmental protection, according to the bank.

The project further is to "enable the target groups to utilize the acquired life skills to engage in income generation activities through improved access to micro-finance services."

The programme is to be executed by the Malawian Ministry of Gender, Youth and Community Services. Funding also goes to the renovation of multi-purpose youth centers at the National Centre for Literacy and Adult Education (NCLAE) and Karonga and skills development centers at ATTIGA, Neno, Liwonde and Magomero.

The ADF loan will be used to finance 94.6 percent of the foreign exchange and about 87 percent of the local cost of the project whose total cost is estimated at approximately US$ 13.7 million.
