Rural electrification study financed in Burkina Faso

afrol News, 18 April  - A programme to study the possibilities of rural electrification in Burkina Faso has been financed by the African Development Fund (ADF). The development dynamics in favour of the rural community will be given focus in the study.

The ADF has announced that it has approved a grant of Franc CFA 856 million to fianance the study, which is to be implemented by the National Electrification Plan (PNE) and the Fund. The total costs of the study are estimated at Franc CFA 907, the rest to be financed by the Burkinabe government.

- This study is in keeping with the National Electrification Plan (PNE) and the Bank's strategy which puts emphasis on refocusing development dynamics in favour of the rural community, ADF says in a press statement. This included equitable access to the benefits of development and support to the development of the entrepreneurial private sector. 

The study was to aim at providing the government with an efficient decision and financing seeking instrument for coherent investment in the rural electrification sector. It is supposed to involve the diagnosis of the current energetic situation and an analysis of the rural electrification development options, ADF states.

Further, the study was to "contribute to the improvement of the country's electrification cover through the establishment of a sustainable rural development programme." 

The projects stemming from this study are expected to permit the balanced development of the country and the integration of rural areas into the development process. The study would also make it possible to highlight the role of electrification in the development of rural communities and in the implementation of the national poverty reduction strategy. "Furthermore, the study will define modalities for the involvement of the private sector in the sustainable development of rural electrification," ADF states.
