afrol News, 29 October - According to reports in Côte d'Ivoire's leading newspaper, Fraternité Matin, the Ministry of Culture and Francophonie has taken steps to organise the sector of plastic arts within a legal framework.

Cabinet Secretary Mr. Ayoun N'Da told the newspaper at an Abidjan seminar that the new legal framework's principal task will be to assure the financing of Ivorian art. It will bring safety both for artists and for national and international financing partners, N'Da said. Especially the "criteria for financing of the cultural sector" were debated at the seminar.

The initiative to regulate the sector has come after the European Commission re-embarked on its economic and cultural cooperation with Côte d'Ivoire this year, after the country's return to democracy. The European Union now co-funds several national culture programmes.

Several representatives of the ministry, Ivorian artist and representatives of the European Commission attended the Abidjan seminar.

At the same time, Ivorian artist have created an umbrella organisation, the National Federation of Arts and Culture (FNAAC), to "promote cultural, artistic, social and economic development," the initiators told the news agency PANA.

FNAAC was to promote the "fight to obtain a social and legal status for the various artistic and cultural actors and operators in Côte d'Ivoire".
