afrol News, 1 April - It is now five years since the group "Ferro Gaita" started playing "funaná", a traditional music genre in the interior of the Cape Verdean island of Santiago "to prevent it from dying out". Today, this local music style is getting prepared to seduce and conquest new, international markets, with star Césaria Évora's help. With so far only two records published, the group is now preparing for a recompilation, which is to be launched on the European market within few days. Ferro Gaita is putting its faith in the help from their fellow national, the veteran singer Césaria Évora, to introduce its music on the European continent. For the launching of its promotion in Europe, the Cape Verdean group has already been booked for a performance in Lisbon (Portugal) on Saturday, 7 March (on the Pabellón Atlántico). Actually, Ferro Gaita is participating in Césaria Évora's concert, promoting the international launch of her new record, "Săo Vicente di longe". The group is also to follow Mrs. Évora to her next performance in Paris (in Zénith Palace) on 28 April. The mentioned Paris concert, with an expected crowd of 8,000 fans, is to be the climax of the European tour and launch of Césaria Évora and Ferro Gaita. One also speaks of the participation of one unnamed, important lusophone African politician. Ferro Gaita has also planned the November 2001 launch of a live record, to be produced during the tour in the preceding months, passing through Cape Verde, Portugal, France and the Netherlands. "A dozen songs" are previewed on this live record by Ferro Gaita, mostly stemming from works that have already been edited, but also including compositions that have never before been released, according to the group.
