- As last year, the news agency will close its regular services in August this year. afrol News will re-start reporting on African affairs in its popular and analytic way in September, and we look forward to see you all again then!
Also this year, afrol News' holiday break will include the stop of services from other media through our network. Next year, however, that service will be automatic, providing you with non-afrol news feed throughout August.
afrol News will however not cease its overall operations during August. The Oslo- and Las Palmas-based news agency has been commissioned by the European Union (EU) and Canary Islands government to undertake a study of the technological infrastructure of free West African media this (northern) summer.
The study will emphasise on the strains for press freedom in the region through its assumed poor technological infrastructure and favouritism towards state-owned media. The report in expected to be published in mid- or end-September.
It is expected that the work surrounding the study also will widen our network in West Africa. Aware readers may have noted that during the last year, we have been providing a regular news service from Cape Verde's 'A Semana' and a more irregular service from Guinea Conakry's 'La Lance'. These two media are indeed our first partners in West Africa and are assisting in the study. Both aim at being in the forefront when a new West African media network is being established.
Thus, regular afrol News readers may expect a widened service within the second half of the year - something we hope it is worth waiting for during the drought of August! Again, we look forward to have you back online again in September.
Have a marvellous summer if you are up North - or a pleasant winter if you are down South!
