- The United Nations representative in Cape Verde, Patricia de Mowbray, reiterated on Wednesday her conviction that the eradication of HIV-AIDS in Cape Verde is possible, considering the results of the country’s anti-AIDS program so far - official numbers point towards an HIV infection rate of 0.5%.
“We will work together for the eradication of HIV-AIDS in Cape Verde,” said de Mowbray on Wednesday during a meeting between the Coordination Committee for the Fight Against AIDS (CCS-SIDA) and business leaders from the Leeward Islands aimed at raising awareness regarding the disease in the labor world.
Patrícia de Mowbray indicated that Cape Verde will not be alone in the battle, affirming that “all of the agencies, funds and programs of the United Nations system,” including the International Labor Organization, will also be involved.
This is not the first time de Mowbray has called attention to the possibility of eradicating HIV-AIDS in Cape Verde. She initially launched the challenge some two months ago during the public presentation of the National Strategy for the Fight Against HIV-AIDS.
It was the first time such an ambitious objective was voiced, but Cape Verdean authorities, namely Minister of Health Basílio Ramos and CCS-SIDA executive secretary Artur Correia, reacted with some reservations on the occasion, recommending prudence regarding such a difficult goal.
