afrol News, 16 January - The Malian government is launching a 3.4 million euro project to promote good governance. The good governance project is to achieve its aims through "institutional, human, computer technology and documentary capacity building on one hand and the judicious and equitable use of public resources on the other."

The good governance support project in Mali is to "support the efforts made by the government in implementing sectoral action plans and activities for good governance as well as help modernise and restore credibility to public administration and the judiciary."

The project also is to help develop synergies between poverty reduction strategies and policies and strengthen monitoring and evaluation of the implementation process for greater productivity of public utilities in favour of the disadvantaged people.

It is also expected that this project may contribute to poverty alleviation in Mali "by improving the effectiveness of public service delivery." Its implementation may help to strengthen the technical and operational capacities of the government, of its partners, decentralised communes, the private sector and civil society in order to enhance good governance and the efficient supply of basic public utilities.

At the same time, the good governance project is set to develop the mechanisms and frameworks for consultation so as to strengthen coordination and the needed synergies between partners and restore the populations’ confidence in public service administration.

The costs of the Malian government project are estimated at franc CFA 2.21 billion (euro 3.36 million). The Abidjan-based African Development Fund (ADF) today signed a loan agreement with the government of Mali under which the country was to receive a grant franc CFA 1.79 billion to finance the project.
